USA Basketball has awarded the Mid-Prairie boys coach with this year’s USA Basketball Developmental Coach of the Year Award. Coach Don Showalter led the United States under 16 team to winning inaugural FIBA Americas Under 16 Championship, which qualifies the team for the FIBA Under 17 World Championships next year. Showalter also worked at two USA Men’s Developmental National Team training camps. The CEO of USA Basketball Jim Tooley says the USA Men’s Developmental National Team could not have had a better inaugural year, and Showalter deserves credit for much the program’s success. Showalter joins a list of coaches that includes form Oklahoma and Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson and Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim. The list of previous Developmental Coach of the Year winners goes back to 1996, and based on that Showalter is the first high school basketball coach to receive the honor, all of the previous winners were college coaches.
