Betty Alice VandenburgBetty Alice Vandenburg, age 78, of Oelwein formerly of Washington died Sunday November 15, 2009 at St. Lukes Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a short illness.

Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 am Thursday, November 19, 2009 at the Jones – Eden Funeral Home in Washington with Pastor Darryl Carr officiating. Visitation will begin at 12:00 pm Wednesday at the Jones – Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 Wednesday evening. Betty was born on March 6, 1931 in Brighton, Iowa the daughter of Charles Orval and Lucile (Long) Lowe. She attended country school in Brighton. Betty was united in marriage to Gerald Vandenburg on June 15, 1952 in Wayne County, Iowa. She worked for the McCleery Cumming Company for 20 years. She lived in Oelwein for the past 2 years and previously lived in Washington. She was a former member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America. Betty was an avid BINGO player. She enjoyed Skip Bo and enjoyed her family and their many activities.

She is survived by her husband, Gerald Vandenburg of Oelwein; son, Rodney Vandenburg of Delhi; son, Michael and wife Leslee Vandenburg of Hazelton; son, Steven and wife Akiko of Camp Zama, Japan; daughter, Debbie Vandenburg of Cedar Rapids; ten grandchildren; six great grandchildren; brother, Pete Lowe of Coppock; and her sister, Molly Olson of Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Diana Alice Vandenburg in 1964; two sisters, Dorothy Nash; Martha Bain; and one brother, Jack Lowe.
