The Washington City Council has approved an alcohol permit for August’s Main Street Washington Celebration, but won’t allow the organization to distribute alcohol in the city’s Central Park because of a city ordinance.

The 34th Iowa National Guard Army Band will play Sunday in Washington’s Central Park, in the band shell that a former member paid more than $100,000 to help build.

Renovations on Washington’s Central Park Bandstand are expected to get started at the end of this month. Councilors have hired First Construction Group of Burlington for the project. Park board member Don Pfeifer says they have experience working in Washington. He says it’s actually the same company that built the aquatic center. The bandstand renovation is expected to cost roughly $275,000
