The US Department of Agriculture has released its statistics on the 2012 corn yield by county. They report that extreme heat and drought reduced yields across the state. Only two counties–Palo Alto and Clay in northwest Iowa hit yields of 170 bushels per acre. Washington County farms averaged just over 132 bushels of corn per acre. Keokuk county farms yielded 113 bushels of corn on average. The county with the highest corn yield in the area surrounding Washington County was Louisa, with nearly 163 bushels per acre. Appanoose County in south-central Iowa had the lowest yield in the state, with farms averaging 44.5 bushels of corn.
