Allowable Growth Legislation Passes State Senate

The Iowa Senate has voted to approve a measure that sets allowable growth for schools in the state at 4%. While it passed the senate, Republican State Senator Sandy Greiner says her gut instinct tells her it won’t pass the House. She explains that Governor Terry Branstad has said he wants to address his education reform plan before funding to schools is addressed. She says they need to find out how much the reform costs before appropriating money.

The piece of legislation voted on Wednesday was democratically backed, with an emphasis put on the fact that districts are trying to set up their budget, but are unable to because they aren’t sure how much state funding they’ll receive.

Allowable growth is the rate per student state funding increases per year.
