Mid-Prairie Overcomes Slow Start; Puts Away Wilton

Posted: Wednesday, January 9th, 2013 at 8:29 am

The Mid-Prairie girls basketball team was slow out of the gates Tuesday night but turned things on after the first quarter, cruising to a 61-34 win over Wilton in Wellman. In a game heard on KCII, Wilton controlled the first eight minutes holding a 7-2 lead over the #8 ranked Hawks before Mid-Prairie exploded for 27 second quarter points taking a 29-15 lead to the break. Out of the half Mid-Prairie picked up where they left off expanding the lead to as many as 29 in the second half. The Golden Hawks were led by Mariah Swartzentruber’s 20 points, Mallory McCartor added 14 including the first 10 of the game for the Golden Hawks.

Following the game Coach Marc Pennington said he told his team that actions speak louder than words, and that the first quarter wasn’t good, but that in the second half his team stepped up.

With the win Mid-Prairie is now 7-2 overall, 5-2 in the Cedar Valley Conference and will meet Clear Creek Amana Thursday night in Wellman. You can hear that doubleheader on KCII with pregame at 5:30 and tip off at 6PM.
