Coming off of a school record setting campaign last year the Mid-Prairie wrestling team has set their sights even higher this season. Saturday they posted another first, taking home the championship at the Clear Creek Amana Classic, the first team tournament win in program history. Mid-Prairie sent five wrestlers to the top of the podium including Josh Murphy at 113 who pinned Bettendorf’s Darick Derby in just 37 seconds to secure the title, Kendall Bontrager at 138 who pinned Jacob Ludwig of Bettendorf in 1:26 for the championship, Miguel Sanchez who took home the title with a sudden victory win over Erik Hovey of Cedar Rapids Jefferson, Phirom Peterschmidt at 182 who pinned Quintin Bruce of Cedar Rapids Jefferson in just 54 seconds and Ben Fiordelise at 220.
Head coach Justin Garvey said he didn’t bring up winning a lot, but that he knew his team could get this one.
“You know you never know what’s going to happen during a tournament, so I didn’t want to put a whole lot of emphasis on it, but it’s really big for our program to say ‘Hey we’re stepping into the big time here, and we’re doing things that have never been done and we’re getting recognition for it,’it makes the kids want to work even harder, to see what they can accomplish,” Garvey said. “For me as a coach, for being the first time we do something as a school, it feels rally good, and it just shows how hard these kids have been working, and now we just look for the next thing, what else can we do with these guys.”
Mid-Prairie also recorded runner up finishes at 106 from Ryan Errthum, 126 from Jayse Horning, 160 from Cameron Tolander, and at 170 from Eesaa Baylor. Mid-Prairie has a 7-1 team record and will next be in action Thursday at Wilton.
