The IMS boys basketball team continued their big bounce back week with a 79-32 win over Columbus on the road Friday night. After falling at home to Lone Tree last week IMS went 2-0 this week winning both games by an average of 36 points. Columbus got the first basket of the contest then IMS rattled off nine straight aided by pressure defense leading to easy baskets. After the game IMS Head Coach Dwight Gingerich spoke about the importance of the press for his team against Columbus.
“We noticed that turnovers was something they had troubles with, we hoped that our pressure would have that effect, and we were able to do that,” Gingerich said. “It was 24-8 after one quarter, I thought the effort was good, the balance was there, we had four in double figures tonight.”
IMS took a 48-19 lead into the halftime break and continued rolling in the second half spreading the wealth with four players finishing in double figures lead by Cameron Gingerich with 19 points, Joel Shetler and Dallas Nye each had 13 and Reggie Hostedler had 12. Columbus tried to change things up with some second half adjustments including switching to a 2-3 zone defense but were unable to find a way to slow IMS down offensively. One of the bright spots on the night for Columbus was penetration and getting to the basket. Head Coach Mark Beerends spoke after the game about his team’s guard play.
“Finke and Rivers both do a really good job of trying to get to the hole, and once defences collapse on them they’re looking for the open guy to dish off to, or go up against double teams, and they do a very good job for us,” Berrends said.
Columbus was led by 11 points from Chase Finke. With the win IMS is now 11-2 overall and 9-1 in the SEISC, Columbus is 0-13 in conference and winless overall.
