Ice Fishers Warned Thickness May be Inconsistent

With the cold streak we’ve been experiencing, ice in the county may be strong enough to support anglers. But DNR Fisheries Biologist Chad Dolan says following the warm weather last week, the rain, and then the cold streak accompanied by strong winds, ice thickness can be variable. He says being overly cautious isn’t a bad thing, and recommends frequently drilling test holes as you move across the ice, to check if it’s at least 3 1/2 to 4” thick.

He says to keep in mind that going out onto the ice is always a risk.
