WMU continues their path to the state tournament, after beating Sigourney last night 3-0.
The match showed that both teams were very evenly matched, with WMU winning 27-25, 25-18 and 25-23.
Sigourney head coach Chris Carter said her team was ready for the outside hitters, but the Wolves just had the slight upper hand.
“We definitely were prepared for the outside, and we knew they could run a little bit of a quicker tempo offense then we were used to in our conference, [but] the shoot set to their outside hurt us, more than I wanted it to, but it was just getting used to getting our defense used to moving quickly, which we just don’t see that a lot in our season,” Carter said. “Their hitters did a really good job of just finding the open spots, but I thought everything that we worked on and prepared for we did a really good job.”
Alicia Escher led the way for WMU with 19 kills, while Katie Benson had 39 assists, Shelby Therme was 22-23 from the service line with two aces, Erica Robinson had five blocks and Anna Crawford had 25 digs.
Escher talked after the game about how practice situations helped in game against Sigourney.
“We’ve struggled with finishing games, we tend to drag them out longer than they need to, so we worked on that in practice, with finishing them when we have the chance,” Escher said.
WMU was behind in the first two sets at the start, and WMU head coach Dave Pieart talked after the match about what he said to get his girls going to get the win.
“Relaxing and being patient, the first part of game two especially we had way too many hitting errors, and I think we had six or seven by the time I was out of time outs, and then finished with only one more after that,” Pieart said. “When we relax, when we force the other team to play the ball, we’re much better off offensively.”
WMU is now 28-7 and move on to the regional finals to play Holy Trinity on Wednesday.
