Today starts a month-long emphasis on being prepared for a disaster that can happen at any time.  September is considered Emergency Preparedness Month and Washington-Keokuk County Emergency Management Coordinator Larry Smith says everybody should have plenty of supplies on hand in case of an emergency.

He says the main items are a three to five day supply of food per person and a week’s worth of medicine.  Smith says you should also have a battery-powered radio, first aid kit and a whistle to call for help.  To learn more about Emergency Preparedness kits, contact a member of Washington County COAD.
