The Washington Demons came out victorious last night over the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks.
The Demons won 30-0 and were in the driver’s seat the whole night, despite having a young crew playing their first game under the lights.
The game started slow for both teams, both getting good drives and good field position, before the Demons struck first with a 22 yard field goal by Mason Quigley.
The Demons continued to run the ball at Mid-Prairie as the night went, wearing them down little by little before Washington got the ball later in the second quarter, and ran it in for the games first touchdown off a 29 yard run by No. 29 Kyle Roder to go into the half up 10-0.
Mid-Prairie came back out after the half and continued to run a no huddle offense that they had run all night, but it continued to play into the Demons favor with long passes from quarterback Reid Miller who threw 27 times on the night, but completed only half the time.
Mid-Prairie head coach Pete Cavanagh says it was an offense they wanted to run, but it might change in the future.
“Based on our personal we felt like we could run that style of offense and be able to get short passing game going and run the ball, but obviously we had some issues, we had some guys open and some nice passes, but we have to execute,” Cavanagh said. “We have to really improve our running game and go and watch the film and find where we need to improve, but we’re not going to necessarily scrap anything but it’s definitely something we need to look at for the future.”
Washington had their next score off a fake hand off by sophomore quarterback Daryn Seibelius that he ran in for the second touchdown of the night to make it 17-0.
Washington got two more rushing touchdowns on the night, with one coming late in the fourth by Mitchell Hora to make the score 30-0 after Quigley missed his only kick of the night.
Washington head coach Randy Schrader said there are things to work out, especially converting on six turnovers.
“The problem is we couldn’t capitalize on the turnovers, we just didn’t have that mentality that we had to make some plays, I think one time we had an interception and we ended up with a 4th and 25 or something we ended up losing a boat load of yardage on that,” Schrader said. “Everything is fixable, I don’t see anything that is not fixable right now.”
The 1-0 Demons will play next week in Pella, while 0-1 Mid-Prairie will host Clear Creek Amana.
