Preventing the Spread of Aquatic Hitchhikers

People considering taking their boat on to water this week for the holiday need to be aware of possible contamination of waterways if they don’t use caution. Chad Dolan, Fisheries Biologist with the Department of Natural Resources at Lake Darling says vegetation can stick to the bottom of boat trailers and if not removed can contaminate other waterways.
He says operators need to look underneath the trailers and remove it. Dolan says draining live wells and allowing them to dry can also eliminate cross-contamination.
He adds to not dump bait into the water as the bait might be an aquatic invasive fish. Dolan notes fines of $500 can be assessed if caught stocking fish in public waters.
