A law that has been on the books for ten years received some revisions this week. The Move Over or Slow Down law that took effect July 1, 2002 is designed to protect motorists, people being transported in emergency vehicles and personnel at high risk while performing their duties on the state’s roadways.
Effective this past Sunday, the penalties increase for drivers who fail to follow this law. Washington Police Chief Greg Goodman sees this as a positive thing because the dangerous conditions law enforcement faces while directing traffic after an accident occurs because of dangerous conditions.
He says whenever a motorist sees the flashing lights on the side of the road they need to take caution, slow down and move over. The fine for violating this law is $100 plus a surcharge and court costs.
