Rainfall Amounts Vary for Southeast Iowa in May

The wet month of May we experienced left us with above normal precipitation when compared to the 30-year average. State Climatologist Harry Hillaker says Washington officially received six inches of rain which is just a little under an inch and a half above normal.
He says certain parts of southeast Iowa were one of the very few places in this part of the state that saw an above normal amount because of the severe weather on the night of May 3rd. He adds that because of that storm, different parts of Washington County ended up with below normal conditions.
Hillaker says when compared to statewide, the northwestern quarter to one-third part Iowa was the wettest part of the state. He says it’s too early to tell if we will see drought conditions this summer and into the fall.
