Posted: May 9, 2012 @ 6:25 am In Today's Local News
The number of reported cases of pertussis or whooping cough so far this year shows a large increase over this time last year. Lynn Fisher with Washington County Public Health says more than 154 cases have been reported statewide this year which is a 121 percent increase. Fisher notes there are no cases in Washington County.
She says the symptoms of pertussis mimic a cold, but will turn into a persistent cough. Fisher adds the symptoms are usually worse at night and are more severe in infants and children.
She says the best way to treat whooping cough is take a five-day regimen of antibiotics. Fisher follows up that keeping up to date on vaccinations is the best way to avoid catching Pertussis.
