Dangerous Conditions for Open Burns
Posted: April 4, 2012 @ 6:22 am In Today's Local News
The ISU Extension has issued a warning for those planning an open burn on their property. The light snowfall in the winter, combined with warm temperatures and dry winds, means burns could get out of control. The extension gave some tips on controlling open burns when the weather is favorable. They say smoke is a major concern, and not too burn when the smoke could linger around roadways or populated areas. Waiting for wind speeds between five and fifteen miles per hour is recommended. They also say to wait for a humidity level between 35 to 55 percent, and not to burn before 9am as the humidity and mixing height of smoke will be lower. You should always contact your local fire department for approval before you burn.
