String of Record High Temps Continue in Southeast Iowa
Posted: March 19, 2012 @ 4:00 pm In Today's Local News
Washington set another high temperature again today, bring the total to seven days in a row where the record high has been either tied or broken. Dave Cousins, Meteorologist with the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities says setting this many records in a row is very unusual, but it has happened before. He says there were several days in the summer of 1936 where records were continuously set.
Cousins says these records stem from a pattern where the jet stream and a large ridge of high pressure has remained in place and is not normal for this time of year. State Climatologist Harry Hillaker agrees by saying usually these types of patters will happen in the summer months.
Both Cousins and Hillaker note that it’s too early to tell if the warmer temperatures this early in the spring will have in impact on the upcoming severe weather season.
