The Mid-Prairie girls’ basketball team continues to check off goals the team has set during the course of the year. A non conference win, check. A 7-1 record through the first half of the conference, check. On Tuesday, Mid-Prairie crossed two more items off the list by snagging a share of first place in the Cedar Valley Conference with a 50-38 win over the Runnin’ Regals of Iowa City Regina on the road. A win at Regina in conference play is nearly unheard of, its only happened once since CVC play began 4 years ago and that was in January of 2009. The Regals were also riding an overall 30 game conference winning streak entering play Tuesday, a streak that began in January of 2010. Mid-Prairie led nearly wire to wire, trailing only by a 3-2 score early in the game. The first half saw the Golden Hawks take a 21-17 lead to the locker room despite only having two players in the scorebook as Mallory McArtor and Mariah Swartzentruber shared the workload with 11 and 10 respectively. In the second half you could see the confidence grow as the Golden Hawks continued to knock down jumpers and came up with timely defensive stops and turnovers to hold off the Regals. Regina would get as close as four but the Regal run was quickly answered by a Swartzentruber three. Swartzentruber ended the night with 19 points and McArtor had 18 in the win. With the victory Mid-Prairie stands at 9-4 overall 8-1 in conference and have won six straight and eight of nine. The Golden Hawks will host Tipton Friday night.
