McDonald’s has announced the list of high school seniors nominated for the 2012 McDonald’s All American Games that take place March 28th in Chicago and eight players in the southeast Iowa region were nominated among the 600 players from around the country. The state of Iowa leads the way with 77 nominees, 41 girls and 36 boys.
Five girls were nominated from the southeast Iowa area including Washington’s Sydney Greiner. MacKenzie Bigbee (Williamsburg), Zoe Dutchik (Regina), Taylor Shull (Mount Pleasant), and Serena Ward (Fairfield) all made the list as well.
Demon head coach Phil Long is certainly proud of Greiner, but ads that she has been a special player for many years now.
“I’m really proud of her but it has nothing to do with me. Sydney’s a self-made basketball player. In eighth grade she was coming to my summer basketball camps and winning every division she was in, all the different contests. You knew she was going to be a special kid, one of these kids that are just a gym rat. She works so hard at her craft and created herself into a really good player and I’m just honored to be able to hang with her these past four years and hopefully teach her a few things along the way, but quite honestly most everything she’s done she’s earned on her own.”
Greiner has missed the last five games as she continues to recover from a broken left thumb, but is making progress and the hope is that she returns to the court in early February. Greiner is averaging 17.8ppg, ranking 24th in the state of Iowa and ranks 8th in class 3A.

Three boys were also nominated from this area, including Nick Lyon and Blake Vanderberg from Mount Pleasant as well as Keota’s Casey Sieren. Eagle head coach Dan Stout is not surprised with the honor after all the hard work Sieren has put in.
“It’s just a great accomplishment for someone who has put in the work that he has. I think he got a little more exposure outside of our area, playing some AAU basketball. It just shows that the hard work and effort that he puts in is being rewarded. It comes down to a team thing as well. He’s a good leader that’s helped this team the last few years to some good seasons.”
This season, Sieren has helped lead Keota to a 14-0 record by averaging 18.1 points (34th in class 1A), 9.5 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks per game.
The 24 boys and 24 girls that will participate in the 2012 games will be revealed February 9th on ESPNU at 4:00 CT. You can find out more information on the McDonald’s All American Game by going to www.mcdaag.com.
