Auditors Thoughts on Voter ID Systems
Posted: January 2, 2012 @ 6:24 am In Today's Local News
South Carolina recently struck down a law that would require a state issued ID card in order to vote. Opponents of the proposed law say it would make it more difficult for minorities and young people to vote. Bill Fredrick, Washington County’s Auditor, thinks its not a bad idea to require some sort of ID for voting, but doesn’t see the need for it in the small communities of Washington County. He says the people in charge of voting centers can ask for a valid ID to confirm residency, but generally they don’t need to. He says most of them know the residents of the community well enough that they don’t need to confirm when they come to vote. He also thinks that a system requiring an ID would be too costly for small communities.
