Crows and Pigeons in Winter

You might notice a lot of crows and pigeons around the area this winter. It seems to go against everything we learned about birds in school. They should migrate south, so why do these birds seem to grow in number in the winter months? According to Greg Harris, a local Wildlife Biologist with the DNR, crows don’t make a full migration in winter. They only fly as far south as they need to, and stop when they get to an area with enough resources. He says the crows just move down far enough for other crows usually, so there are Iowa crows in Missouri, and we have crows from Minnesota. He says pigeons don’t migrate, so while it seems like there are a lot of them, it is probably just the lack of other birds that makes them stand out.
