A program is available to help those who may be less fortunate.  The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says their HUSH (Help Us Stop Hunger) program is an effort between deer hunters, the Food Bank of Iowa, meat lockers and the DNR working together to reduce the deer population and provide quality meat to the needy in Iowa.

During last year’s hunting season, more than 6300 deer were donated to their HUSH Program.  This resulted in over one million meals being provided.

Southeast Wildlife District Manager Bill Ohde says after a hunter field dresses the deer, they will need to take it to a participating locker for processing.  The lockers will then skin, bone and grind the meat to two-pound packages of pure ground venison.

Since the program started in 2003, over eight million meals have been provided through the HUSH program.  Local lockers participating are:  Boyd’s Sausage Company, Brighton Locker, Crawford Meat Plant, and the Packwood Locker. To learn more about the DNR’s HUSH program, follow the link here [1].
