The Lone Tree Lions were in Brooklyn for a second time this season facing BGM, the first time it was a non district regular season game, this time it was to advance to the quarterfinals. The Lions came in 9-1 with their only loss to top ranked Lisbon. The BGM Bears came in 8-2, their losses to 2A number one Regina and the other to Lone Tree in week six. In a game heard on KCII, BGM struck first as the Lions were pinned back deep at their three and on a run up the middle the ball came loose and BGM recovered at the Lone Tree three. They punched it in on the next play with Danny Brau rolling off the initial tackle and falling into the endzone. Trouble on the pat snap made it 6-0 BGM.
The Bears were driving early in the second quarter and got down to the Lone Tree 29, on fourth down Levi Reitzler intercepted a pass at the twenty and took it 81 yards for a touchdown. The Reitzler touchdown gave the Lions a 7-6 lead. On the ensuing kickoff a short kick that almost looked like an onside attempt put the Bears at their own 42. They’d put together a drive that got them down to the Lion two and on fourth down were able to punch in a quarterback sneak by Spencer Gritch.
It was 13-7 BGM at halftime. The Lions came out and with the opening drive of the second half, put together a long clock eating drive that took them to the two and a key fourth down play Gabe Lorack hooked up with Conner Larew on a play action pass into the endzone. The score gave the Lions a 14-13 lead and from their the defenses didn’t allow any other scoring as the Lions won and advance to the quarterfinals.
Lone Tree improves to 10-1, while BGM ends their season at 8-3. The Lions will now host Lisbon, and a chance to avenge their only loss. Lisbon was down 18-16 at halftime to Lynnville-Sully, but the Lisbon Lions were able to get the win in a shootout 44-33. Lone Tree and Lisbon square off on Friday and you’ll be able to hear the game on KCII. We’ll be on the air at 6:45 with the pregame show and take you to a 7-pm kickoff.
