The state of Iowa has been honored as a “Purple State” by the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome. This honor comes from the state’s effort to prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome. Sandy Hotchkiss, Staff Nurse at Washington County Hospital and Clinics says to help promote this campaign, they received a grant from the University of Iowa where they were able to give DVDs to parents about the Period of Purple Crying.
She says now they will show the DVD to parents before the baby goes home. Purple is an acronym that describes specific characteristics of a baby’s crying to let parents and caregivers know that this is a phase in their child’s development.
The program is to instruct parents of steps they can take to care for a crying infant. For more information on this program, look here .
