In a time where lopsided opening round playoff games are not unusual, the Washington Demons and the Union Knights played what you’d think a playoff football game would be like. In a game heard on KCII, the Demons went to LaPorte City to face a Knight team that was making their fourth straight playoff appearance.
Union scored on their first drive with some big runs from stand out running back Wes Burnside including a fourth and four 19 yard run for a touchdown.
The Demons put together a couple of drives but were able to get into the endzone late in the first half, when quarterback Jake Redlinger scrambled and connected with Colin Steele who took it to the Union five. Redlinger would score on a three yard run.
It was 7-7 at the half. In the second half Union scored with a heavy dose of Burnside to go up 14-7. The Demons had a couple of big sacks off play action fakes to stall Knight drives.
Down a touchdown the Demons started at their ten and went 90-yards and scored on a 31-yard pass from Redlinger to a hobbled Brock Kimball to make it 14-13 with 2:02 left in the fourth. After the game Washington Head Coach Randy Schrader said they were having trouble stopping the Knights running game and with overtime having teams start at the ten they didn’t like their chances in that format so the Demons went for two. Jake Redlinger escaped a sack and rolled right to complete a pass to Steele for the two point conversion to go up 15-14.
The Knights though would start at their own 40 and with a couple of pass plays got to the Demons 35. On a low pass, the Demons defensive back made a play for an interception but just missed and Trev Hadachek caught the ball around the shoe laces and was able to run in for the touchdown. Union gets the win 22-15.
For the Demons, Jake Redlinger had 16-carries for 59-yards and scored a touchdown. He was 12-20 passing for 160 yards with a touchdown and 2-point conversion pass. Parker Turner had 9-carries for 24 yards. Receiving wise Colin Steele had 7-receptions for 77-yards and the two point conversion reception. Defensively, Austin Knupp was in on 10-tackles, Garrett Covington in on 8 tackles, Mitchell Hora and Tanner Knupp had 7 tackles.
The Demons end their season 5-5 while Union improves to 8-2 and will travel to face Solon on Monday. Solon was a 44-0 winner over Center Point Urbana.
