Washington County 4-H Celebrates Alumni Month

[1]Janice (Schneider) Carr remembers how 4-H was always a family event travelling to the State Fair and Cattle Congress. She showed beef during her 10 years in 4-H for the Clover Cloverettes 4-H club. Here Queen Abbie (Timmins) Parmele awards Carr during a beef show in 1967. She said one of her favorite 4-H highlights were the trips to Washington D.C. Carr’s three children were a part of Washington County 4-H and now she serves on the Youth Committee. Photo Courtesy: Washington County Extension.The Washington County 4-H has been celebrating all this month while looking back at the past. Amy Green, 4-H and Youth Coordinator says September is National 4-H Alumni Month and during the month, the Extension Office has been doing different activities to focus on their history.
She mentions many members have been identifying past champions and individuals in older pictures that have been posted on Facebook. Green says some alumni that live in other counties are still involved with 4-H here in Washington County.
She adds many times the alumni will have children also involved in the program. Green says if you are a 4-H alumnus and would like to get involved to contact the Washington County Extension.
 [2]Dave Crone of Washington was active in the Horse project area during his 8 years in the Washington Hustlers. He was successful at even a young age winning halter horse his first year. Here he posses with ribbons from a pleasure class in 1979. Crone now lives on his home farm where his two children are also active in 4-H. Crone serves on the Youth Committee as well. ![1983 Beef Queen Deb (Bohr) Vittetoe stands with champion beef showman, Dave Richardson. Vittetoe was a member of the 4-H Maidens from 1975-1883. She explained, “One valuable skill I learned [in 4-H] and use today is sewing. Even though most do not sew clothing like they used to years ago, I use my sewing skills often fixing zippers, sewing buttons, hemming pants, etc. I am so glad my mom took the time and patience to teach us four girls those skills.” Vittetoe has had three of her own children go through the 4-H program as well and enjoys seeing former 4-H friends from years back at the fair each year. ![Todd Harbison, Mandy Farrier and Jake Hotchkiss were all members of the State 4-H Conference in 1998. Hotchkiss, a member of the Franklin Cubs and Horse & Pony Club from 1990-2000, said, " I had a lot of great experiences [in 4-H] but the one that stands out is the time I spent with my grandpa Hotchkiss building a wood shelf at his place under a Sycamore tree during the summer. I was so proud of that shelf. It was two pieces of wood but such a fun learning experience as well as a great time with my grandpa.” Hotchkiss now lives in Washington and works for Washington County Secondary Roads engineers’ office.  [5]Shelbi Sieren, Eric Hammes, Kyle Bermal, Tim Messenger, Stacie Sieren, and Brandi Sieren, all from the Keota area, were teamed up in 2003 for a 4-H Volleyball event at Mid-Prairie. Tim Messenger was a member of the 76 Progressives and Riverside Ramblers during his nine years in 4-H from 2000-2009. He said, “My favorite 4-H memory was in my third year. I bought two cattle and showed them at the fair. I won Reserve Champion Simmental Steer and the other steer was Reserve Champion Lightweight market steer.” Messenger now is a student at ISU.
