The Keokuk big offensive front seemed to give the Demons problems much of the night, but in the end the Demons fought back to get into what looked like was going to be a lopsided game. In a game heard on KCII, the Chiefs came out very strong turning two Demon turnovers into touchdowns and forcing several Demon punts which led to Chief touchdown drives. Washington scored late in the first half when Parker Turner scooped up a fumble and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown.
It was 28-6 at halftime. Keokuk would extend their lead to 35-6 before Washington would start a furious rally in the fourth. The biggest play came on a Keokuk punt, a high snap over the punter’s head led to a safety. On the free kick Washington’s Parker Turner returned the kick all the way to the Keokuk 25. After a Demon touchdown, Washington would recover an onside kick and put together another scoring drive. WIth the score 35-28, Keokuk managed to recover the second onside kick. The Demons did stop them and get one last drive but the Chiefs were able hold them and ran out the clock to win 35-28.
Through much of the game the Keokuk offensive line ranging from 250 to 300 was able to open a lot of holes but by the end of the night it was cleared the Chiefs began to wear down and looked spent.
With the win, the Chiefs improve to 2-0 and next go on the road to play Fort Madison. The Demons fall to 1-1 and will return home to open district play hosting Grinnell.
