Louisa County Fishing Day Cancelled

The effects of a harsh winter continue to be felt, as the Louisa County Conservation Office has announced their biennial Fish ‘n Fun Day. The fishing day was scheduled for June 18th, but due to a severe winterkill of fish in the pond at the Langwood Education Center, it was decided to cancel the event. Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Biologist Chad Dolan says fish die-offs in farm ponds have been common the last few years. Heavy snow and ice cover for extended periods of time mean aquatic plants don’t produce oxygen. Oxygen levels then get so low that fish cannot survive.
Dolan says the fish populations can recover, but he adds the severity of the fish kill at Langwood likely means the pond will need restocking to restore the population. Once there are catchable fish once again, the event will be rescheduled.
The last fish kill and subsequent restocking was in 2001, and after the pond regained its normal population, the Conservation Office held the event in 2004, when a record number of fish were caught.
