Washington County’s unemployment rate increased in January according to data from the Iowa Workforce Development.  Washington County’s 1.6% increase means 200 more people are out of work when compared to December.  The unemployment numbers went up an average of 1.5% in all of southeast Iowa.

The lowest increase was in neighboring Johnson County and the highest increases occurred in both Washington and Keokuk Counties.  The statewide estimate of those receiving benefits went down by 500.

When compared to the national figures, Iowa’s unemployment rate is almost 3 percentage points lower.  To see unemployment totals for the entire state, click here [2].
