Loebsack’s Thoughts on Redistricting
Posted: March 21, 2011 @ 6:28 am In Today's Local News
The task of redistricting Iowa’s Congressional districts has begun and Iowa is unique when compared to other states when it comes to the redistricting process. The redistricting is needed because of the results of the 2010 census. Second District Congressman Dave Loebsack says the redistricting process that is taking place is done by an independent and non-partisan commission. Loebsack adds when the new districts are selected, they will be based on population and no counties will be split into different districts.
The Legislative Services Agency is charged with creating the Congressional and Legislative District boundaries using the 2010 census data. The Agency is required to deliver their redistricting plan to the General Assembly on March 31st.
Public hearings will be conducted around the state regarding this plan. The Legislature will take action to either deny or approve the new districts.
The overall redistricting plan has to be completed by September 1st and be signed by Governor Terry Branstad by September 15th. Congressman Loebsack says he is honored to represent voters in his current district and says he would be honored to represent anyone in any new counties that he might get as well.
The new Congressional districts will take effect in January 2013. For more on the redistricting process, look here .
