The Washington Public Library Foundation along with Humanities Iowa is presenting two lectures on Native American art and culture this weekend. Dr. Leona Zastrow is an educator and appraiser from Santa Fe, New Mexico. She has spent over 30 years working in the field of Native American Art.
She was invited to work with the wonderful collection of Native American art and artifacts owned by the Washington Public Library. The collection came to the library in 1964 as a donation from Emily Powis Simpson-Atmore.
Dr. Zastrow says most of the collection is from the Apache and Hopi Tribes from the American Southwest. She will be speaking tomorrow afternoon about the library’s collection which includes pre-historic and pieces from the 19th Century.
On Sunday, Dr. Zastrow will be talking about her life-long passion for the art of the native peoples of the Southwest. Both presentations are free and open to the public starting at 3:00 on Saturday and Sunday. To learn more, listen to today’s In Touch With Southeast Iowa program.
