IMS boys basketball season came to an end in a hard fought quarterfinal game with the Guthrie Center Tigers. IMS took the early first quarter lead going up 10-2, but Guthrie Center would rally back and take the lead in the second quarter. The Tigers got a strong first half from 6-5 Dustin Clark in the paint. Clark had three blocks in the game and that seemed to disturb IMS’ game in the paint.
With the score 28-25 at halftime, Guthrie Center came out on a 9-2 run. After that IMS would hold them to four points the rest of the third quarter.
It was the Tigers leading 41-32 going into the fourth and late in the game IMS started forcing some key turnovers with their press and Guthrie Center’s Brandon Clark was going to the line and consistently making the first free throw but missing his second. Those two factors allowed IMS to rally back with a couple of late threes. Another forced turnover with six seconds left, gave IMS’ Ethan Gingerich a three point shot to tie, but this one didn’t fall and Guthrie Center would win 53-49.
The tough stat for IMS on the day was 4-16 from beyond the arc. Ethan Gingerich led the way from IMS with 18 points, Chance Miller 11 points and Johnny Lackender and Brian Hagedorn each had 7. IMS ends their season at 24-2, Guthrie Center advances and improves to 20-7.
Guthrie Center will play St. Mary’s out of Storm Lake. St. Mary’s won big over Exira-EH-K 63-34. On the other side of the bracket Danville beat Boyden-Hull 69-62 and NU High out of Cedar Falls beat Lynnville-Sully 54-46.
In 2A, PCM-Monroe beat Pella Christian 63-51 and Western Christian Hull beat Treynor 46-26.
