The state of Iowa has specific rules regarding the number of school days and Washington Superintendent Dr. Mike Jorgensen is offering comments regarding those rules.  He says in order for the school district to count the day as a school day, there has to be 5 and a half hours of teaching time.  Dr. Jorgensen says weather dismissals and scheduled development for the teaching staff on the same day are exceptions to this rule.  He says the current Iowa Code says students have to have 180 days of instruction and two of those days can be used for Parent-Teacher Conferences.  Dr. Jorgensen mentions the state of Nebraska currently has a requirement of using teaching hours instead of teaching days.  He says there is talk in the current legislature of changing the Iowa Code to this which could pass this year.  Dr. Jorgensen says this could result in a change of hours in the school day.
