Madison Street Public Hearing Scheduled
Posted: February 18, 2011 @ 6:25 am In Today's Local News
The Washington Streets Committee is holding another public hearing regarding a possible change to Madison Street in Washington. Committee Chair and City Councilor Karen Wilson-Johnson says the Iowa Department of Transportation will be presenting updated information on an idea to city residents of changing the lane configuration on Madison Street to three lanes instead of four. She says the plans show one lane in each direction with a center turn lane going from East 2nd Street to the Highway 1 interchange.
Wilson-Johnson says this change could happen after IDOT resurfaces Madison Street in fiscal year 2012 if city officials authorize the plan. She says many residents expressed concern at a January 19th meeting about reducing the street to three lanes could cause more problems because of the larger amount of slower moving vehicles that use Madison Street.
Wilson-Johnson says many residents feel the speed of the road is an issue and would like to see the speed limit enforced if possible. This public hearing will be Wednesday, March 2nd at 4:30 in the old public library.
