Census Data Shows Gains And Losses For Our Area

The 2010 Census results are in, and Washington County is among those counties in the state of Iowa who have grown their populations. Washington County now has 21,704 residents, an increase of 5.00% over the year 2000. Not all communities within the county fared equally, however. The City of Washington is up 3.1% to 7,266. Kalona is also up 3.1% to 2,363. Ainsworth grew 8.2% to 567, Riverside is up 7% to 993, and Wellman saw a 1.1% increase to 1408.
Communities having population losses were Keota at -1.6% to 1,009, West Chester -8.2% to 146, and Brighton -5.1 to 652.
In Keokuk County Sigourney lost 6.8% of its population to 2,059. Counties surrounding Washington who experienced population gains were Johnson with an increase of 17.91%, Jefferson, 4.09%, and Iowa at 4.36%. Counties showing losses were Keokuk at -7.80%, Louisa at -6.53% and Henry at -.94%.
