Iowa now has a new gun law. Washington County Sheriff Jerry Dunbar says the new law, which took effect at midnight means Iowa is now a “shall issue” instead of a “may issue” state. Dunbar says the new permits are for five years. He says certain federal and state restrictions are still in place that would prevent someone from receiving a permit. Dunbar says another change is citizens can now carry a firearm openly and not just concealed. He says he has up to 30 days to either approve or deny the request. Dunbar says to contact your local sheriff’s office if you have any questions regarding the new gun law.
