New Firewood Regulations in Iowa
Posted: January 25, 2011 @ 6:24 am In Today's Local News
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has made new recommendations for firewood in the state of Iowa. Iowa DNR District Forester Lisa Louck says all packaged firewood offered for sale in Iowa must show the place of harvest by both county and state. Louck says these regulations have been put in place mainly because of the emerald ash borer. She says the way they have learned that the bug has moved in other states is that the bug spreads through the movement of firewood. Louck says they needed to put a rule in place to hopefully stop the spread of the insect by stopping the movement of firewood from county to county and state to state. The DNR is also trying a buy local campaign for firewood to stop the spread of the bug. The new regulations went into affect January 1st, but Louck says they are trying to get the word out now before the camping season starts.
