The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently announced a proposed change in the amount of fluoride that is put into water because it is causing spots on some kid’s teeth. They are recommending limiting fluoride levels to .7 milligrams per liter of water. The current standard since 1962 has been a range of .7 to 1.2 milligrams per liter. A recent government study found that 2 out of 5 adolescents have tooth streaking or spottiness because of too much fluoride. Kalona City Administrator Ryan Stensland says they recently tested at .9 milligrams. Stensland says if the recommendations come down they would easily be able to get down to .7milligrams. Stensland says to reduce the amount of fluoride in the water they would just decrease the amount they put in to the water every day. He says the new standards might actually save them a little bit of money every year.
