Holidays Fraught with Fire Hazards
Posted: December 10, 2010 @ 6:25 am In Today's Local News
Fires happen more in the winter months then in any other time of the year. Washington Fire Fighter Randy Tisor says the most common cause of fires he sees in the winter months are from space heaters and drop cords. The National Fire Protection Association says candles and Christmas trees also play a role in fire incidents this time of year. The NFPA says if you have an artificial tree make sure it is labeled as being fire-retardant. If you have a fresh tree, make sure the green needles don’t fall off when touched and water the tree stand every day. Tisor also says not to load your Christmas tree with lights. For real trees he suggests using smaller bulbs and LED bulbs are good for either type of tree.
