Iowa’s unemployment rate increased from June to July, growing a percentage point to 6.8%, but Washington County saw a point two percent decrease. Washington Economic Group Director Ed Raber says the percentage of Washington County residents out of work fell to 5.4% from June to July, a decrease he says was influenced by an uptake in hiring by local businesses.  Raber says Washington County enjoys a lower unemployment rate than neighboring counties, but most in southeast Iowa still saw a decrease from June to July.  Johnson County had the lowest July unemployment rate with 5%, while Henry County has the highest jobless rate at 8.8%, slightly higher than Wapello County’s 8.6%.
