Washington’s City Council did not remain unanimous during Wednesday’s meeting, as Councilman Fred Stark and Bob Shepard voted against furthering an ordinance that would remove the city’s 30 mile per hour speed limit signs on East Washington Street. A 35 mile speed limit, recommended by the DOT after a survey showed 80% of traffic went faster than the 30 mile per hour limit, would then go into effect. City Attorney Craig Arbuckle said the council can keep its speed limit but it won’t be enforceable, noting that state code gives control of Highway 92’s speed limit to the DOT. Councilmen Shepard and Stark argued the safety of residents that use the road, notably those at the United Presbyterian Home, was enough justification to look into fighting the increase. The ordinance will have its third and final reading at the council’s next meeting.
