West Nile Virus Concerns
Posted: July 4, 2010 @ 5:00 am In Today's Local News
Pooling and standing water from rainfall over the past month has the Iowa Department of Public Health concerned of a rise in mosquito population and the disease of West Nile Virus. The IDPH has the following tips for prevention. Use insect repellent with DEET or oil of lemon eucalyptus. DEET should not be used on infants less than 2 months old and oil of lemon eucalyptus should not be used on children under 3 years old. From dusk to dawn are peak biting times for many species of mosquitoes. Wear long-sleeved shirts, pants, shoes, and socks whenever possible outdoors. Eliminate standing water around the home because that’s where mosquitoes lay eggs. Empty water from buckets, cans, pool covers and pet water dishes. Since 2002, West Nile Virus has been found in every county in Iowa, either in humans, horses, or birds.
