Washington County Taxpayers Funding Lawsuit, Riverside Residents Paying Twice
Posted: July 2, 2010 @ 6:51 am In Today's Local News
The Washington County Board of Supervisors has approved a $60,000 internal advance to pay for legal fees in a lawsuit between the county and the city of Riverside. County Auditor Bill Fredrick says Riverside is refusing to continue making repayments for money it received to finance new infrastructure projects, a plan implemented because the Iowa Constitution limited how much money Riverside could borrow. Fredrick says Riverside began repaying the county in 2008, but stopped making $175,000 repayments in 2009. He says taxpayers are paying for the county’s legal fees in the lawsuit, but adds that Riverside residents are paying twice – first for the county, and again for Riverside.
