The Washington Community School Board approved changes to it’s new high school project that could potentially save the district more than $300,000. The board voted to use inexpensive flooring, lay crushed rock in the west portion of the parking lot instead of concrete, and use less expensive materials for hallways in the Education Wing of the new building. The board also discussed setting literacy and other education goals at 70% for students, above the 41% mark to be considered proficient. Superintendent Mike Jorgensen said that in two years, federal regulations will make students across the country take the same standardized tests, and current testing predicts that Iowa students will rank among the highest in the country.
