Consumer Spending Increases – How Do Local Businesses Fare?

The U.S. Department of Commerce reports consumer spending grew a timid .2% from April to May, and area businesses report similar slow or no growth. Washington Wal-Mart Manager Dennis Purcell says he’s seen consistent sales, but no clear sign of improvement, while Korner Kremery owner Richard Schmidt says sluggish May sales may have been caused by wet weather. Washington Chamber of Commerce Director Tim Coffey says business owners report flat to sluggish sales increases during May.
