Toolesboro Indian Mounds: A Free Summer Activity
Posted: May 28, 2010 @ 6:23 am In Today's Local News
The Toolesboro Indian Mounds in Louisa County are among the best-preserved and accessible remnants of an ancient culture from around 100 B.C. to 200 A.D. The five-acre site includes several large mounds, a small visitor center and a prairie demonstration plot. Louisa County Conservation Board Executive Director Julie Ohde says the mounds were constructed by a Native American group following the Hopewell burial tradition. The mounds are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated as a National Historic Landmark and State Preserve. The grounds are always open to visitors. Toolesboro Indian Mounds and Museum is located on County Road 99 east of Wapello.
