In an effort to raise awareness about healthy swimming, the Iowa Department of Health is reminding that next week is National Recreational Water Illness Prevention Week. RWI’s are caused by germs that are spread by swallowing, breathing in mists of, or having contact with contaminated water in pools, water parks, hot tubs, fountains, lakes and other bodies of water. The IDPH has a few recommendations avoid RWI’s. First, test the water frequently and maintain water quality within the recommended ranges. Shower with soap before swimming and wash your hands after using the toilet or changing diapers. Take your kids on bathroom breaks or check diapers often, and avoid swallowing pool water. For more swimming safety tips, contact the IDPH.
