The boys basketball state champions have been crowned. The tournament wrapped up on Saturday with the 3A and 4A championship games. On Friday Rock Valley repeated as the 1A champion and Western Christian, Hull knocked off the defending state champs Solon. With that win Western Christian is now 6-0 in state basketball championship games.
In Class 3A, Sioux City Bishop Heelan was hoping to repeat taking on Pella. Pella had beaten the number one seed Mount Pleasant in the semifinals. Pella was down by as much as 12 in the second quarter but made it a six point game at the half and early in the third quarter the Little Dutch took a lead and it was back and forth until a minute left in the game when Heelan broke a tie taking a two point lead and they’d end up winning 50-45.
Finally in the 4A title game, defending state champs Ames with standout Harrison Barnes, who is headed to North Carolina to play for the Tar Heels, led the entire game except for a 3-0 deficit early. Ames led 29-20 at halftime and got their lead up to 15 towards the end of the third. Ames won 47-37.
So it was the first year since the four class system was implemented that all four state champions from the previous season made it to the title game, and except for Solon in 2A, all ended up repeating.
