Rock Valley and Solon try to repeat

Class 1A and 2A boys basketball state champs have been crowned. This is the first year since the four class system was implemented that all four defending state champs reached the finals, would they be able to repeat? Well in the 1A game Rock Valley led by as much as eight in the first half but Calamus-Wheatland came back and made it a five point game at halftime. But in the third quarter Rock Valley would run away leading by as much as 22 points towards the end of the third quarter and in the fourth got it up to a 28 points lead. Rock Valley wins for the 1A title for the second year in a row 68-51. Rock Valley’s two 6-9 kids Jordan Dyskstra had 21 points and 13 rebounds and Marcus Heemstra had 19.
In 2A, the Solon Spartans, who beat Mid-Prairie in the opening round game at state, was facing Western Christian out of Hull. The Spartans in their championship run last year beat Western Chrisitan in the semis in double overtime. Last night it was a close game through much of it thanks to Solon’s strong defense. Early in the third Western Christian got a steal and a Solon turnover turned into a Western Christian layup and three pointers and quickly Western Christian was up by 7. In the fourth Solon got as close as five points away but the Wolfpack kept scoring and Solon trying to come back had to force a lot of three point shots. In the last two minutes of the game as a team Western Christian was 11-14 from the free throw line as they won 58-45. When Western Christian Hull gets to the state championship game they are automatic as with last night’s win they are now 6-0 in state championship games. So with the Solon loss that puts to bed the question of if all four defending state champs will be able to repeat.
